On Tuesday, May 22th, 2018, JANSI Annual Conference 2018 was held at the Iino Hall in Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

Shortening the conference to a half day this year and putting a spotlight on the theme “Enhancing the foundation for self-imposed regulation”, the conference was aimed to promote opinion exchanges and deepen understandings on voluntary safety improvement efforts.

Following the greetings from Mr. Toyoshi Fuketa, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulation Authority, Mr. Jacques Regaldo, Chairman of the Board, WANO, and Mr. William D. Magwood, Director-General of OECD/NEA, Mr. Luis Reyes, a former Executive Director of Operations, NRC, delivered a keynote presentation titled “Establishment of the reactor oversight process in the United States.


In the Session followed, under the theme of “Enhancing the foundation for self-imposed regulation” chaired by Prof. Naoto Sekimura, Vice President of the University of Tokyo, first he made a short speech titled “Fundamental aspects of Continuous Improvement of Nuclear Safety”, and each panelist made a short speech titled “Nuclear Safety, Crisis Management & Continuous Improvement” by Mr. Dominique Minière, Group Senior Executive Vice President of EDF, “Self-Improvement of the Industry in relation to Reactor Oversight Process” by Mr. Preston D. Swafford, President and CEO of Candu Energy Inc., “National Regulation and Self-Regulation” by Mr. Shuichi Kaneko, Director of Oversight Planning and Coordination Division of NRA, “Initiatives for Enhancing Nuclear Safety” by Mr. Tomoaki Kobayakawa, President of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc., “Voluntary and Continuous Initiatives for Safety Improvement by Mr. Shigeki Iwane, President and Director of The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., and “Self-regulation inside the Nuclear Industry” by Mr. Shojiro Matsuura, President and CEO of JANSI, were made. In the panel discussion followed, lively opinions and discussions were exchanged by the above panelists.


The conference was attended by more than 390 people including JANSI members and domestic and international experts, and ended on a high note.
