On Thursday, April 7, 2016, JANSI Annual Conference 2016 was held at the Iino Hall in Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

Mr. Preston D. Swafford, the president of CANDU Energy Inc., gave a keynote speech titled “Securing Nuclear Safety in the Competitive Environment”. While the deregulation in electricity retail market has started in April in Japan, various issues to be considered from the nuclear safety standpoint were introduced in the speech, referring to precedence cases on how nuclear safety is secured in those countries such as US, where electricity has been deregulated.

Following this keynote speech, a panel discussion titled “Ensuring Nuclear Safety in a Competitive Environment” was held in Session 1. The panel was chaired by Mr. Koji Nagano, Director of the Socio-economic Research Center of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), and the panelists included Mr. Swafford, the Keynote speaker, Mr. Makoto Yagi, the president of the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., Mr. Satoru Katsuno, the president of Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc., Mr. Shinichi Inoue, the vice president of Japan Aircraft Pilot Association, and Ms. Sumiko Takeuchi, a deputy project leader of the 21st Century Public Policy Institute.

In Session 2, Mr. Kiyoshi Naruse, JANSI director, reported “JANSI Activities in FY2015”. Subsequently, poster session was held.

In Session 3, Mr. Michiaki Uriu, the president of Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc., made a presentation titled “Efforts for Safe and Stable Operations at Sendai Nuclear Power Station Units 1 and 2” on the experiences of Sendai Nuclear Power Station which restarted operations in late last year. Referring to the presentation, another panel discussion titled “Securing Nuclear Safety in Restart Operations” was held with Mr. Shojiro Matsuura, the chairman of JANSI, as a chair. The panelists included Mr. Uriu, the presenter, Mr. Akihiko Mayumi, the president of Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Inc., Mr. Ei Kadokami, Senior General Manager of Nuclear Energy Systems Division of Energy & Environment of Mitsubishi heavy Industries, Ltd., Mrs. Junko Ogawa, the 4th Women in Nuclear (WiN) Global Chairman, Lifetime Director, and Mr. Masuhiro Nakano, Sendai Restart Support Team Leader of JANSI.

The conference was attended by approx. 320 people including JANSI membership and domestic and international experts.
